The Walt Disney Co. is launching a program to hire 1,000 military veterans, including some at its Anaheim resort, the company announced Tuesday (today). Story updated at 1:40 p.m.

Bob Iger, the Walt Disney Co.’s chief executive officer, made the announcement at the annual shareholders meeting in Kansas City.

The Disneyland Resort will be one of the company’s locations in the program.

The local resort will offer different types of jobs, including internships, guest-service roles and professional posts, said Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman.

On May 22, Disney is scheduled to hold the West Coast Veterans Career Expo in Anaheim. Veterans should check the Disney Careers website for updates on how to participate.

A section of the Disney Careers website now is dedicated for veterans. On Tuesday, a search of positions at or near Anaheim showed 427 jobs.

Disneyland Resort is Orange County’s largest private employer with 22,000 workers at two theme parks, three hotels and the Downtown Disney entertainment-shopping district in Anaheim.

The Heroes Work Here program is designed to hire, train and support returning veterans, both by hiring and encouraging others to do so. The goal is to provide 1,000 jobs over the next three years.

The company plans to help nonprofit organizations that train and support returning veterans. A public service announcement will be aired on its television stations.
